Ordering by fax to find the right fit
As a tall student, I struggled to find shirts that fitted me in Japanese shops, so I ordered directly from Brooks Brothers in America by fax. Later, I happened to see an advertisement for a part-time job at the brand and applied. My main reason was to overcome my shyness, rather than simply to work for a brand I admired.
While working there, I learned about its long history and its place in American culture, and gradually came to appreciate what it stood for. Looking back, Brooks Brothers has been part of my life ever since those student days.
Passing each piece to its next owner
I do not think of the items simply as secondhand goods. I iron them carefully and aim to send them out in the best condition I can. It feels less like selling used clothes and more like caring for each piece before passing it to its next owner.
I try to describe wear and damage in as much detail as possible. After once experiencing a misunderstanding with a customer over an item’s condition, I became especially careful about explaining it—even if my assessment might seem strict. Helping customers understand exactly what they are buying matters more to me than simply making a sale.
What I want to keep doing
The selection centres on shirts in good condition, with many sizes that suit customers in Japan. I would also like to gradually add more pieces that carry a sense of American traditional style. I hope each customer finds something they are glad to have bought.
